A “wave” of EU EEC electric vans Pickup Trucks could replace vans in British cities, the Department for Transport has said.

Traditional white diesel-powered delivery vans may look very different in the future after the government announced “plans to revamp last-mile deliveries”.

The rise of online shopping has led to a surge in the number of lorries on UK roads, with lorry traffic growing by 4.7% in 2016, with 4 million passenger vans now on the road.

Instead of diesel-powered vans driving miles, the Department of Transportation (Dft) envisions deploying a wave of “electric vans, quads and micro-vehicles” to deliver last-mile goods around town.

Germany’s transport ministry said this would require “significant changes to the current way of distributing goods”, as the current delivery model is to deliver packages from large out-of-town warehouses that are not suitable for small electric vehicles.

By calling on industry to provide evidence, Germany’s transport ministry is asking how replacing traditional vans with electricity could help the government meet its air quality targets. Businesses and individuals can advise on how incentives can help companies move away from traditional vans, how cities and “integration centers” can help improve “logistics efficiency” and other obstacles these proposals may face.

“Our last mile call for evidence and the future of mobility calls for evidence, marking a phase in our efforts to make the most of these tantalizing opportunities.”
